General internships

The Australian Museum (AM) is a dynamic source of reliable scientific information and a touchstone for informed debate about some of the most pressing environmental and social challenges facing our region: the loss of biodiversity, a changing climate and the search for cultural identity.

The AM holds more than 21 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions, school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. The AM’s mission is to make nature, First Nations cultures & science accessible and relevant to everyone.

General internships (i.e. internships that are not related to AMRI) include participating in projects in Marketing, Public Affairs, Partnerships and Philanthropy, Design, Education, Finance, Corporate Services, Public Programs. The First Nation division also administer internships. The length of an internship varies according to the requirement outlined by the course.

The Australian Museum maintains a safe working environment. The Museum requires that students seeking an internship will have necessary insurance cover from their tertiary institution for public liability and personal accident insurance.

It is a condition of the Internship that a student’s insurance is to be covered by their tertiary institution. Please review the terms of the Internship Agreement in this regard.

The Australian Museum must receive all paperwork from the tertiary institution outlining the student’s course, number of hours they must complete, the student’s course coordinators contact details and signature once the project they will be working on is determined.

The health and wellbeing of AM workers, visitors and the community remains the AM’s top priority – that includes our Interns. The AM is committed to the development and implementation of COVID Safe policies that meet or exceed the conditions set out in the NSW Government Public Heath Orders (PHOs). The AM Covid Vaccination Policy requires all workers to have had at least an initial two doses of a recognised COVID-19 vaccination to attend AM Premises. Further, the policy now strongly encourages all workers and visitors who can safely be vaccinated to remain up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations, as recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). When applying for an internship please confirm you have had at least an initial two doses of a recognised COVID-19 vaccination and/or have a medical exemption. If already accepted to an AM internship, you will need to provide proof of initial two doses of a recognised COVID -19 vaccination/medical exemption to your hiring manager. Failure to provide the necessary evidence will mean you will not be allowed to enter AM premises.
